Text Box: BOARD NOTES
FROM THE FEBRUARY 7, 2008 MEETING OF THE PRINCEVILLE BOARD OF EDUCATION...
Text Box: The Princeville Board of Education began their regular meeting recognizing some of the good things happening in the Princeville School District. Princeville Applause was given to Suzanne Cluskey, PHS Senior—for her nomination to the IHSA 2008 All-State Academic Team; Rose Elbus, Kristy Wooden, and Angela Colyott—for receiving a FirstGrant award from National City Bank; and PHS Counselors Jeannie Jones and Intern Sara Scott and volunteers from Chapin and Russell Associates, SEAPCO, and Dunlap High School—for their recent counseling assistance for staff and students.

The PRINCVILLE PRAISE Award was presented to Ted and Ron Gilles for their many contributions to the conservation education of the children of Princeville School District and our community. This award is given to individuals in the Princeville School District Community who have shown exceptional service to the District and its students.

In action items, the Board approved the out-of-state math/physics field trip, the installation of additional controls on the Princeville High School heating/air conditioning units, and a no-cost maintenance contract with Xcell Mechanical Systems for the same units. The contract will cover the control mechanisms of the HVAC units.

The 2008-09 school year calendar was approved. School will begin with a teachers’ institute on August 18, 2008. The first day of student attendance will be August 19, with the first full day of school on August 20. The school calendar is determined by a calendar committee and a vote of all School District employees.

Board members Darin Cowser and Steve Rees will represent the Board of Education on this year’s Vocational Curriculum Study for the business department.

In other business, Joe Chovan was employed as the Freshman Volleyball Coach beginning next school year and closed session minutes were reviewed and a determination made for the minutes to remain confidential.

Superintendent Hanneken provided a summary of the brainstorming session with various stakeholders of the community and District architects. A group from the school community provided ideas for the parameters and outcomes of a School Feasibility Study.

The Board of Education discussed procedures to fill the Board vacancy created by the resignation of Laura Ehnle. Several community members have expressed interest in the position. Surveys have been sent to these individuals and a special board meeting has been scheduled for February 19 at 7:00 p.m. to interview candidates. It is hoped that a new board member can be seated at the conclusion of the meeting.

Mrs. Hanneken presented the Midyear Progress Report for the Princeville School District Strategic Plan. She praised school district personnel for their many accomplishments. Information was also provided concerning the TIF expenditure report and the discontinuance of federal Medicaid reimbursement. The cost of the latter to the District will be over $25,000 annually. Mrs. Hanneken reported that the utility building destroyed by fire has been completed. All that remains to complete the insurance claim is to move storage items into the building.
