Math 110 - Concepts of Mathematics

Course Description

This purpose of this course is to introduce the nature of mathematics through a study of elementary logic, set theory, statistics, geometry, and the mathematics of finance.  The course will focus on mathematical reasoning and real-life problem solving.  This is not intended to be a survey course or a math appreciation course.  Math 110 will satisfy three of the six general education credit hours in mathematics needed for the transfer degree.  Elementary education majors should enroll in MATH 220 rather than this course.

 

Prerequisite

Algebra II with a grade of “C” or better or appropriate score on math placement test

 

Course Topic Outline - A daily outline will be provided for each chapter that includes homework assignments, quizzes, and tests.

Necessary materials and supplies

ü      Textbook

ü      3-ring binder with loose leaf paper and graph paper – All notes, homework, and handouts must be kept neatly in the binder OR Notebook and pocket folder with loose leaf – all notes in notebook and homework (loose leaf) and handouts in folder

ü      Pencil -All in-class notes, homework, quizzes, and tests must be done in pencil!

ü      Scientific Calculator – required

ü      Graphing Calculator – optional

 

Student Expectations

ü      Be in your assigned seat and ready to begin class when the bell rings.

ü      Remain in your assigned seat until dismissed by the teacher.

ü      Bring all necessary materials to class every day.

ü      Follow directions the first time they are given.

ü      Do not interrupt while the teacher or other students are talking.

ü      Do not eat candy in the classroom.

ü      Respect the rights, property, and opinions of others.

Points are earned on the following five items:

1.      Chapter Tests

·         one 100 point test at the end of each chapter

·         include a variety of questions, including matching, multiple choice, and free response

2.      Quizzes

·         one 25-50 point quizzes in select chapters.

3.      Daily Homework Quizzes

·         5 point quiz each day after homework is discussed.

·         Open book/open notebook.

·         Specific time limit each day.

4.      Projects

·         There will be a maximum of two projects.

·         Projects will either be completed individually or with a partner.

·         Most of the project will be completed outside of class.

5.      Participation

·         Students will receive two participation points each day. 

·         Inappropriate classroom behaviors will result in loss of points.

·         Participation points will be deducted for UNEXCUSED absences.

·         Participation points will be applied to the grade at the conclusion of each chapter.

 

 

Extra Help

I am available most mornings before school at 7:45am and most days after school until at least 3:30pm.  If you need extensive assistance, please make arrangements in advance so that I know you are coming.  Otherwise, stop by anytime for questions on the homework. 

 

Absence Procedures

If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to turn in all missed work.  You will be granted one day for each day missed to make up work.  So, for example, if you are sick on Monday and return to school on Tuesday, all work must be turned in on Wednesday.  If you miss a test or quiz, you will have two calendar days to make it up before or after school.

 

Study Partner

Each student will choose a classmate to be their study partner.  You should contact your study partner when you are absent for notes and assignments.  You should also meet with your study partner when you are having difficulty with an assignment or preparing for a test or quiz.  You are encouraged to work together with your partner, but you are not encouraged to copy from your partner!
