I also know that I got a Pride grant for the camera that is taking all of these pictures, but I am not going to take a picture of the camera.

"Books for Reluctant Learners" & "More Books for Reluctant Learners"
PRIDE grant - kids & books.JPG (3768636 bytes)

PHS library was SO thankful to receive PRIDE grants both last year & this year.  Last year’s grant was entitled “Books for Reluctant Readers”, and this year’s was “More books for Reluctant Readers.”  Though the attached picture is obviously staged of kids “reading” the grant-funded books, the new collection of high-interest, low-difficulty books made possible by PRIDE has been hugely popular with the students, especially with this year’s extra-long homerooms.  Both grants were aimed at establishing a core collection of high-interest, easy-read books to target the student population that has traditionally avoided books and reading as a whole. The grant books are rotated in and out of a special display area.  Not only have they attracted the attention of our reluctant-readers, they have motivated both the regular and reluctant reader populations to look further and find other library materials that catch their interest.  The books’ presence has really encouraged kids to look into books beyond the required school assignments and seek materials for enjoyment, as well.

  Thanks so much!

Here are a few pictures using the books on critical literacy that were purchased through a 2007 PRIDE Grant.

The purpose of the book grant was to give students a chance to have a “voice” in those life influences that arise both inside and outside of the classroom.  I wanted to “re-envision” my literacy program to develop in students the ability to critically evaluate their ever changing world.

Have a great day!
